 Communication:

Communication is derived from Latin word Communis. Communis means common. Communication involves telling, listening and understanding. Exchange of ideas between two or more persons is Communication. If there is no receiver, there is no communication. According to Rivers and Timperley, time devoted to listening in communication activities is 45%. Time devoted to speaking in communication activities is 30%. Time devoted to reading in communication activities is 9%. Dictation means “test of writing”. Cloze means “missing part Real life is authentic material. Intonation is the use of Tunes.

Communication Skills:

There are 4 communication skills in English Language. English language communication skills are Listening, speaking, reading, writing. First objective of teaching English is to develop Listening skill. The number of kinds of sounds are 2 which are Consonants sounds and vowel sounds. The number of vowels in English are 5 while number of consonants in English are 21. Number of vowel sounds are 5 while number of consonant sounds are 24. A phoneme is sound. Tongue, teeth and lips are articulator while face is not articulator. Uttering with force of breath is Stress. The number of branches of phonetics are 3.

Verbal Communication:

Communication with words is verbal communication.

 

Non-Verbal Communication:

Communication without words is called non-verbal communication.

Structural View:

It tells us about how language is structured.

 

Listening:

Listening means lending ear to spoken words to understand message. Steps in listening: 1- perception and decoding. In listening, Ears and mind are involved.

 

Extensive Listening:

Global listening is also called as Extensive listening. Listening amusing Radio programme is Extensive listening.

 

Intensive Listening:

Discrete listening is also known as Intensive listening. listening public announcement at railway station is Intensive listening. Schedule reading is an example of Intensive reading.

 

 

 

Writing:

Dictation means “test of writing”.

 

 

Reading:

”. Reading means “recognition and comprehension”. 3 Rs stand for “Read, Recall, Review”. In SQ 3R, S stands for Survey and Q stands for Question. Punctuation means Marks.

 

Skimming is a type of reading. Skimming means reading quickly to know “specific piece of information”.  “Which of the titles fits the text best” is the example of skimming.

 

Scanning:

“See the time table and tell the break time” is example of Scanning.

 

Intensive reading:

Reading the question paper in the examination hall is the example of Intensive reading.

 

Extensive Reading:

Novel reading is an example of Extensive reading. Passing the examination is adopted for extensive reading.

 

Speaking:

The rise and fall of the pitch of our voice is Intonation.
